Their efforts received a significant boost in the first round of the draft when they traded up four spots with the Buffalo Bills to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who set a new scouting combine record with an astonishing 4.21-second 40-yard dash.

They posted a 40-yard dash overlay of Mahomes and Worthy, with the latter leaving the star quarterback in the dust and even out of the frame at one point.

Worthy’s record-breaking performance

This wasn’t the first time Mahomes found himself at the centre of the combine banter. In a lighthearted post on X just before the combine began, Mahomes had asked the NFL not to juxtapose his 4.80-second 40-yard dash time from the 2017 combine with those of the 2024 prospects.

However, with Worthy‘s record-breaking performance, the NFL couldn’t resist poking fun at Mahomes once again, creating a new combined tradition.

As news of his record-breaking feat spread like wildfire, Worthy found himself inundated with messages of congratulations.

Yet, one text stood out among the rest messages from none other than Mahomes, something that may have won over the player.

“Patrick Mahomes‘ text meant so much to me,” Worthy revealed in a recent interview with Tyler Dragon of USA Today.

“Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me.”
