The 7 best putters on the PGA Tour in 2024 – and the sticks they use

Putting is a crucial part of any golfer’s game whether they are on the top tour or hacking it at the local.

Here we dive into a look at the trending best putters on the PGA Tour and the equipment they use.

Jordan Spieth – Scotty Cameron 009 prototype

Ranking joint sixth in strokes gained: putting for the 2024 season heading into the Texas Open, Jordan Spieth has been consistent on the greens and consistent with his choice of equipment.

Spieth has used the same Scotty Cameron 009 prototype putter since 2009 when he was still a junior golfer and is infamously resistant to change in that area.

The once triple black putter is worn down to the metal, but he will not be making a change any time soon.

“It’s not Triple Black anymore, it’s almost like chrome on the bottom now, and it’s pretty rusty,” Spieth said.

“It’s got its nicks, but whenever I switch to something else for a day and I look back at my putter, it just has that look to it that’s just been great for me.”

Chad Ramey – TaylorMade Spider GT Notchback

TaylorMade Korn Ferry Tour rep Nick Springer, whom Ramey worked with closely during his time on the feeder tour, was responsible for putting adding the Spider GT Notchback to his bag in 2022.

Ramey has remained among the more consistent putters on the tour and has kept faith in the TaylorMade Spider GT Notchback.

“With 86g dual-tungsten weights on the heel and toe, Spider GT Notchback has premier stability, forgiveness and distance control and those benefits were seen by Chad in testing,” noted TaylorMade Tour Representative for Putters Bucky Coe.

“Having previously used a blade, the characteristics of the Notchback mid-size mallet made the adjustment easy in terms of feel, which was improved even more with the new Pure Roll ² insert in GT Notchback.”

Mathieu Pavon – Ping Cadence TR Tomcat C

Another player who favours an older model of putter is Frenchman Mathie Pavon, who won the Farmer’s Insurance Open earlier this season, with the Ping Cadence TR Tomcat C putter in his bag released in 2015.

The club’s production has been discontinued for commercial sales, but it remains the weapon of choice for Pavon and has another copy added to the famous Golden putter vault at Ping.

It is a stick that melds the new (in 2015) and the old quite well with a classic yet modern look that holds up to today’s standards.

Peter Malnati – Scotty Cameron TourType Special Select Masterful Tour Prototype

Scotty Cameron putter loyalist Peter Malnati gained just over eight strokes on the field (+8.31, 3rd) at Innisbrook with his Select Masterful 1.5 Tourtype SSS prototype putter, leading the field in putts per GIR (1.60) with the Newport-style blade to claim the Valspar Championship.

Malnati first put his putter of choice into play at last season’s Farmers Insurance Open. That followed a testing session with Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Brad Cloke. In the two events leading up to the Farmers, Malnati had tried a Phantom X 11.5 mallet.

“I wanted him to get back to his feels, get back to feeling the blade and not fighting the mallet,” Cloke said. “He experimented with higher MOI, but he’s a feel guy, he doesn’t get real technical. He’s more of, I see it, I want to feel it.

“This was something that allowed him to get back to putting naturally, like he does. He’s stuck with it ever since Farmers and his putting stats have been outstanding.”

Taylor Montgomery – TaylorMade Spider Ghost S

Taylor Montgomery’s TaylorMade Ghost Spider S putter from 2013 has been given several resprays by its owner himself.

Montgomery has owned the putter since his undergraduate days at UNLV, and while he’s had brief periods with various flat sticks, most of his professional success has come with the old Ghost.

His putter features a low-lofted face, measuring just 1-1.5 degrees, which helps to balance the mallet’s back-weighted, forgiving shape. Because of the putter’s centre of gravity, an increased loft would propel the ball too high, compromising a clean roll across the putting surface. However, a reduced loft promotes a faster roll in this instance.

Aaron Baddeley – Odyssey White Hot Versa 1

Aaron Baddeley has been the best on the greens this season so far, but it hasn’t helped him end a long PGA Tour title drought.

Baddeley now uses the Odyssey White Hot Versa 1 putter for his PGA Tour outings.

The White Hot Versa 1 is a classically shaped heel-toe weighted blade putter with a crank hosel creating a moderate toe hang suitable for strokes with moderate arc and face rotation.

It was developed with input from world-renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon, and Odyssey make much of the Versa alignment system.
