What Jordan Spieth managed to achieve in 2013 that hadn’t been seen on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods

Jordan Spieth might be having a bit of a lull in the last few years in terms of his golf but that doesn’t mean he’s not already had an exceptional career.

Spieth is without a win on the PGA Tour since the 2022 RBC Heritage and in the main, he’s shown little sign of getting back to his very best.

This current run for the American is a far cry from the player we saw in the mid 2010’s.

After making his debut as an official PGA Tour player in 2013, it took Spieth just two years to register in the majors as he won both the US Open and The Masters in 2015 while also finishing second in the PGA Championship that same year.

Spieth then added The Open in 2017 but since then, much like Rory McIlroy did, he’s yet to get anywhere near winning the career grand slam.

However, while the grand slam might be what Spieth craves, he still has plenty of accolades to look back on, including doing something in his debut year we’d not seen since Tiger Woods.

Back in 2013, Jordan Spieth went from having no PGA Tour card, to being a full-time player, to finishing inside the top ten an impressive eight times in his debut season.

More impressively though and where Spieth matches up with Woods is the climb he had in less than 12 months.

At the beginning of 2013, Spieth wasn’t even sure he’d be on the TOUR full-time. Fast forward to the Tour Championship in August, though, and Spieth would be there competing after a remarkable year.

That appearance in the Tour Championship meant he became the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 to go from no PGA Tour status to Tour Championship competitor.

Impressively, Spieth managed to finish inside the top 30 at the season finale, proving to everyone that he was very much a man to watch out for.

It seems quite amazing that we’re looking back to 12 years ago for Jordan Spieth’s debut season but here we are.

Over the last decade plus, Spieth has carved out a remarkable career and it’s a crying shame he hasn’t added any more majors, let alone the grand slam.

Still, when it comes to debut seasons, they don’t get much better. Yes, Spieth didn’t manage to get a win over the line but there were some impressive displays.

Two runner-up spots at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and also The Masters, showed we’d got a star on our hands.

With time still well and truly on his side, it feels a matter of when and not if for Spieth in terms of winning all four.

But he must find form and soon, before a new and emerging PGA Tour talent pool leaves him in the rear-view mirror.
