DeChambeau Looks Forward To Major Showdown With McIlroy At PGA Championship

Bryson DeChambeau is eagerly anticipating another major face-off with Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship. Their previous encounter at the Masters was intense, with DeChambeau closing in on McIlroy’s lead through three rounds. Although DeChambeau eventually fell behind, McIlroy triumphed, securing a career grand slam and joining an elite group of golfers.

DeChambeau has been a formidable contender in recent majors, though he has only secured one victory at the US Open last year. He narrowly missed another win in 2024 when Xander Schauffele edged him out by a single stroke at the PGA Championship in Louisville. Schauffele now aims to join Woods and Koepka as players who have won consecutive PGA Championships since 1958.

DeChambeau remains optimistic about his chances this year. “I feel like I’ve always had the capacity to play well in major championships and contend consistently,” he stated. He emphasised that performing well in majors requires everything to align perfectly, and he feels confident after his performance at Valhalla following Augusta.

McIlroy’s victory at the Masters made him only the sixth golfer to achieve a career grand slam. He now aims to become just the third player since 2000 to win the first two majors of a calendar year, following Woods and Spieth. Meanwhile, DeChambeau is determined to outperform McIlroy at Quail Hollow this week.

I do believe you have to have a lot of distance out here,” said DeChambeau. “Rory is a great driver of the golf ball and his iron play is great, too.” He acknowledged that both their playing styles suit the course well and expressed hope for another thrilling contest like The Masters.

DeChambeau shared his thoughts on Twitter: “It was a battle all week, and even without my best stuff, I proved to myself that I have the ability to win this tournament one day.” His determination remains strong as he continues to strive for success in upcoming tournaments.

The golfer is focused on improving his game for future majors, particularly targeting areas like The Open Championship. He believes he’s progressing positively by creating multiple opportunities for himself to win these prestigious events. Valhalla last year reinforced his belief that he can compete at this level consistently.

As DeChambeau prepares for Quail Hollow, he remains committed to giving his best effort alongside McIlroy. Both players are eager for another exciting showdown reminiscent of their clash at The Masters.
