Rory McIlroy makes emotional admission about his parents after returning to UK following Masters win

After winning the Masters last month, Rory McIlroy opted for low-key celebrations, but had an emotional reunion with his family in his homeland.

The world saw as the Northern Irish golfer secured the Masters at Augusta by beating Justin Rose.

This victory ensured the 35-year-old finally complete the career Grand Slam, while he also ended his wait for a first major since 2014.

After such a high, Mcllory opted to have a quiet week following his incredible achievement, with the golfer visiting England to check on his home currently under construction.

He also visited his homeland of Northern Ireland, landing at George Best Belfast City airport a few days after his victory.

The golfer is known for liking to keep his personal life private, but opened up about the emotional reunion with his mother.

Speaking in the US ahead of the Truist Championship on Wednesday afternoon, he stated: “I didn’t want any fanfare, I tried to keep it as private as possible.

I just wanted to see my parents and the people that were closest to me. And we had a really nice two days. It was, you know, with my dad, like, I never get that emotional with my dad. It was great, it was great to see him.

“But then, you know, when I saw my mum we were both a mess for a few minutes. As an only child, I have a bond. I’m lucky and I know a lot of people feel this, that they have a close bond with their parents.
