13 Years Later, Rickie Fowler Is Still a Good Luck Charm

Apparently, you should never meet your hero, because they will disappoint you. Idols look only good on the TV screen—the reel world. In the real world, they are hardly anything more than flawed humans, like the rest of us. We heard this, you heard this, and 10-year-old Karl Vilips, too, probably heard this.
Or, maybe not.
Regardless, when Vilips, now a PGA Tour winner, saw his hero, Rickie Fowler, in 2013, he couldn’t help but ask for a picture. You must remember how Fowler looked back then—the shabby hair, the flamboyant clothes, the chic glasses. The lone beatnik among the PGA Tour’s sanctimonious boys.
Anyways, Vilips took a picture with Fowler near the coffee shop. The Aussie was about half the height of Fowler at that time. 13 years later, he is actually taller, with a PGA Tour win under his belt.
Check these two pictures taken 13 years apart. Isn’t this why golf is beautiful?
Tiger met Arnie for the first time when he was 16. Rory was 13 when he first saw Tiger in real life. Rahm got an autograph from Henrik Stenson when he was 12.
Encounter of a lifetime. Life-changing encounters.
Vilips is now playing with Fowler at the RBC Heritage. The Aussie posted the 2013 picture on his Instagram story before the cut day. He believes it was good ‘juju.’ He moved up 38 spots to T13 on Friday. Fowler is pretty far back at T41.
But both made the cut. A first for Vilips since winning the Puerto Rico Open in March. Unfortunately, Fowler has been on a shabby run lately. So, this might just be the last time (at least this year) that both will play the weekend in the same tournament.
