Charley Hull raises eyebrows with “zero interest” golf claim

Charley Hull is fast becoming the best interview in golf.

The world No.11 has found her voice and isn’t afraid to use it, winning an army of new fans for her unflinching honesty.

That was on display yet again this week during the £4million PIF Saudi Ladies International.

Discussing her goals for the year, the 28-year-old Hull revealed that her biggest aim for the year actually has nothing to do with golf.

“I want to try and get my 5K run time down to 20 minutes by the end of the year,” said the English ace, who added that she is currently running the distance in around 26 minutes.

For context, the average 5K finish time for female runners in the UK is currently around 38 minutes according to a recent study carried out by RunRepeat.

Bringing down her time is, according to Hull, her top priority as it relates to training. Golf? Not so much.

“I don’t train for golf,” she added. “I have zero interest in training for golf. I don’t want to just be a golfer. I want to be an athlete. I train because it’s good for my mental health, and it’s good for me. I just enjoy it as a hobby.”

The comments echo those made by Hull on Instagram last month.

“People are asking why I run so much and why I don’t do golf specific training,” she wrote. “1. golf training is boring I have no interest in that at all but the training & weights I do help my golf.

“2. I love running as a hobby and for my fitness and my mind. The more fitter you are the less jet lag you get and the more stamina you have.”

Solheim Cup star Hull made her first LPGA start of 2025 at last week’s Founders Cup after making the most of an extended off-season.

“The best thing I did was I went to Bruges and ate loads of chocolate,” she said “It was really good.”

Asked how much chocolate she ate, she added: “Enough to put on a lot of weight. But I ran enough to not put on a lot of weight. But yeah, it was so good.”
