JUDY MURRAY EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: “I will always be disappointed that Scotland didn’t take advantage of the opportunity it had when Andy and Jamie were at the top of world tennis”

Judy Murray, the mother and longtime coach of tennis stars Andy and Jamie Murray, has once again voiced her concerns about Scotland’s missed chance to build a lasting tennis legacy during the peak of her sons’ careers.

In an exclusive interview, Judy reflected on the golden years when Andy, a multiple Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, and Jamie, one of the world’s finest doubles players, put Scottish tennis in the global spotlight. Despite their success, she believes Scotland failed to invest properly in grassroots programs, facilities, and opportunities for young players.

“I will always be disappointed that Scotland didn’t take advantage of the opportunity it had when Andy and Jamie were at the top of world tennis,” Judy admitted. “We had visibility, role models, and worldwide attention, but there wasn’t enough done to build the infrastructure that could inspire and sustain the next generation.”

Judy has long been a passionate advocate for tennis development in the UK, often pushing for better funding and more accessible coaching for children, especially in Scotland. While proud of her sons’ achievements, she worries that the country missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cement a strong tennis culture.

Today, Judy continues her work at grassroots level, running coaching programs and initiatives aimed at getting more young people into tennis. Her message is clear: success at the top level should always be used as a catalyst for growth at the bottom.

Scotland may have produced two champions in Andy and Jamie Murray, but Judy’s disappointment serves as a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough—it takes vision, investment, and long-term commitment to truly transform a sport at the national level.
