Charley Hull criticised by golf fans for her ‘totally unprofessional’ actions on day one at the U.S. Women’s Open

Charley Hull opened her U.S. Women’s Open account with an even-par round of 72 at Erin Hills.

Hull carded four birdies and four bogeys during her opening round at the U.S. Women’s Open, and she is currently sitting in a tie for 34th.

A few months ago, Hull spoke about how much women’s golf has progressed over the past few years, and she’s spot on there.

The women’s game has come on leaps and bounds and that’s because of hugely marketable players like Hull herself and Nelly Korda.

However, the 29-year-old has been criticised fairly regularly for some of her on-course behaviour in the past.

And that was the case once again during the first round of the US Women’s Open at Erin Hills on Thursday.

The pace of play was incredibly slow at Erin Hills during day one of the second women’s major of the year.

In fairness, the pace of play is always slower than usual at major championships.

But that doesn’t suit Hull one little bit. She’s one of the quickest players on tour and often seems agitated when her competitors slow her down.

After the eighth hole on Thursday, the Englishwoman walked ahead and sat on the ninth tee while Lexi Thompson was still finishing up.

And golf fans really weren’t happy with her behaviour.

While another said, It’s frustrating but you can’t let actions of others get to you. She is out of frame of mind.

A third fan said, The LPGA should be ashamed. This is NOT a good look. Charley may be handling it wrong but Lexi is too dang slow. It’s ridiculous!

A fourth follower of women’s golf said, Rude and unprofessional. Maybe why she never wins anything.

Then a fifth golf fan simply said, Unprofessional.

Meanwhile a sixth said, Not great etiquette leaving the green before your playing partner is finished no matter the pace of play.

And a seventh said, I feel there is too much pressure for fast play these days. Golf is a sport where you should have some time, there’s no clock. That said, slow play is slow play. Not a good look on her part.

An eighth golf fan simply said, Totally unprofessional.

Charley Hull needs to find a way to cope better with slow play

Nothing’s going to change at major championships.

The courses are always more challenging, and the majority of players subconsciously take more time over each shot.

Hull needs to find a coping mechanism that works for her, because she cannot afford to continue to get agitated during major championship rounds.

It’s simply not conducive to winning the biggest tournaments in the game of golf.

Hull is well in contention at Erin Hills, and is sitting just four shots off the leaders. Now it’s up to her to find a way of coping with the slow play that will inevitably accompany her during the final three days of the championship.
