Scottie Scheffler’s old issue has come back to haunt him at The Memorial but every other player should still be worried

Scottie Scheffler has done what Scottie Scheffler does best by creeping into the top five at The Memorial and the writing could be on the wall for every other player.
Scheffler is four under par for the tournament after consecutive rounds of 70 left him three off the summit.
In the tough wind and rain at Muirfield Village yesterday, Scheffler battled his way around and recovered from a double bogey on ten to still finish under par.
Why Scottie Scheffler is a big problem for everyone else at The Memorial
If there has ever been a criticism of Scottie Scheffler, it was that his putting wasn’t always up to standard.
Prior to going on his remarkable run in 2024, Scheffler often struggled on the greens and when he did get it right, it was no surprise to see the wins start to pile up.
However, those putting woes seemed to return in round two at The Memorial and while it might be a worry for Scheffler and something to fix, it’s an even bigger worry for the rest of the field.
Despite not really holing any putts, Scheffler is still just three back of the lead and we see this time and time again with the world number one.
He positions himself among the pack, makes others nervous, before turning on the after burners like a prime Tiger Woods and running away with things.
The fact he’s done that again with the coldest of putters, should strike fear into every other player.
Scottie Scheffler’s putting from round two of The Memorial
If Scottie Scheffler can get the flatstick working then he could shoot a brilliant score in round three.
He was second in hitting greens in regulation and 12th in strokes gained in approach, while he was also T12 overall in SG.
However, in terms of his putting, he was way down in 54th for strokes gained against the field.
As a comparison, playing partner Sepp Straka was 9th for SG putting but he’s down in T31 on the leaderboard, some seven shots behind Scheffler.
That just shows if Scheffler can get it right on the greens, and maintain the rest, then he’s in for a brilliant weekend.
