Jack Nicklaus says he ‘can’t stand’ what happens in modern golf after seeing it first hand on day two at The Memorial

Jack Nicklaus has not been shy of an opinion or two at this week’s Memorial Tournament and the event host has once again criticised something he sees in the modern game.
Nicklaus’ success came over multiple decades in the game and quite impressively, he pulled it all off without the help of the modern technology we see in today’s game.
In fact, Nicklaus admitted he’d be right up there with the longest hitters if he did play in the modern era, referencing his 341 yard drive from his hey-day.
However, Nicklaus also has a few gripes with some things in modern golf.
And after Nicklaus called out the use of aim-point and other putting methods, he’s now slammed the PGA Tour for what they’re making some players do.
Jack Nicklaus unhappy with the PGA Tour after what he saw on day two of The Memorial
With Nicklaus very much in the thick of the action he often takes to the commentary booth to offer up his own unique insight on things.
However, when the on-course reporter went to Ben Griffin for a quick interview between shots, Nicklaus was not happy as he slammed the technique and suggested in his day, it wouldn’t have been allowed.
“I can’t stand that, the interview on the golf course,” Nicklaus fumed.
“Let me tell you how I think, how I feel…I mean, seriously, here’s a guy, leading the golf tournament, he’s just hit the edge of the rough, he’s got a very difficult shot on a very difficult hole, and you’re talking to him about stuff that totally takes his mind off of what he was doing.
How do you think Hogan would respond to that question? You would not have any teeth left if you did…He’d hit you right in the face with it.”
Modern golfers have all new kinds of pressure compared to Nicklaus’ day
This is a fair comment from Nicklaus to be honest and if you were a golfer right in the mix of a big event, you’d not want this sort of thing.
The problem is that the landscape has changed so much now compared to Jack’s days that it’s almost a given and an expectation that golfers take part in such things.
With all eyes constantly on players from camera phones, live TV and more, if Griffin was caught rejecting such an interview and looking unhappy, he’d get backlash from that too.
All things said, the media element is one thing Nicklaus’ era didn’t have to deal with quite as much as the modern day player.
In fact, things would probably look a lot different if those pressures existed in the same way they do now.
