‘I can’t wait’ – Rory McIlroy to make golf history in career first at $4m tournament

Rory McIlroy will reach another career milestone later this year when he plays at the inaugural DP World India Championship.
The 2025 PGA Tour has been a huge success for McIlroy so far as he has won three events throughout the calendar.
AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am victory was followed by a second Players Championship win before he was crowned champion at the Masters.
McIlroy finally achieved his career Grand Slam by beating Justin Rose in a tense play-off at Augusta National last month.
Following the PGA Championship last weekend, the US Open in June will be the final major tournament of the year.
However, McIlroy has already look ahead towards the latter stages of 2025, which is when the DP World India Championship takes place.
Located at the Delhi Golf Club, the action will begin on October 16 and see the Northern Irishman make his tournament debut in India.
He will become the first ever reigning Masters champion to feature at an event in the country in what is another historic moment.
The tournament boasts a prize fund worth $4million and McIlroy has revealed his anticipation for its first ever edition.
“I’m excited to not only tee it up in India for the first time but also visit a country that I’ve always wanted to explore,” he said. “I’m proud to play in the inaugural DP World India Championship.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing a global schedule and as I have previously said, there is tremendous potential to grow golf further in the country.
“This is a great opportunity, and I can’t wait to play in front of Indian golf fans.”
McIlroy is a two-time PGA Championship winner but could only settle for a tied-47th finish last weekend at three over par.
The 36-year-old will return to the course on May 29 for the Memorial Tournament, the next signature event on the tour.
He will then travel to the United States once again for the US Open in a bid to win two majors in one year for the second time ever.
McIlroy last won the tournament in 2011 by finishing eight strokes in front of Jason Day for his first major title.
The golfing legend has ended the last two editions in second behind Wyndham Clark and Bryson DeChambeau respectively.
