Johnson Wagner suggests what ‘a lot of players’ really think about Bryson DeChambeau as he shares his own view of the LIV Golf star

Few players have intrigued golf fans quite like Bryson DeChambeau over the last few decades, with the LIV Golf star rarely afraid to make significant changes to his game.

It has been fascinating to follow Bryson DeChambeau down the years. DeChambeau immediately made a name for himself for being the player who used a set of irons with shafts all of the same length. And of course, the 31-year-old had a real impact across the PGA Tour by deciding to add speed to his swing in late 2019.

But DeChambeau has not always been the most popular figure either. DeChambeau has not been afraid to upset people with some of his comments. He once famously claimed that Augusta National should be a par 67 for him. Meanwhile, he certainly seemed to take a fair amount of criticism during his feud with Brooks Koepka.

But that has changed significantly in the last couple of years.

Johnson Wagner suggests what many players really think of Bryson DeChambeau

It was remarkable how beloved DeChambeau was after winning the US Open at Pinehurst last year. It is one of the most incredible turnarounds the game has seen perhaps since his hero Payne Stewart.

However, with that, it is inevitable that some fans are going to wonder just how genuine DeChambeau is. Some will clearly think that it is an act.

And it turns out that it is not only some fans who may think that. Speaking on Fried Egg Golf, Johnson Wagner suggested that plenty of his peers have their doubts.

“He’s way more well-rounded. The short game, the putting, he has reinvented himself with that putter. And as uncomfortable as it looks, and as weird as it is that he goes and paces off the distance and has that yard stick that he practices with, and he knows how far to take it back for a putt – it’s weird. But it works for him. It is who he is,” he said.

“Whether it’s real or it’s fake, the engagement he has with the fans, he’s got more support than he ever has. Who would have thought Sunday at Augusta that it was even a question in the last group with Rory McIlroy that yeah, Bryson’s going to have his fair share of fans out there, and he proved that he did.

“Of all the guys who went to LIV, he’s the only one that has really benefitted from that decision because it’s allowed him to be himself a little bit more and express himself in different ways. Good on him. He’s been great to me. Every time I ask him to do anything, he does it. I know that a lot of players still think he’s completely full of it, but I don’t care. He’s got it figured out.”

Questions asked of Bryson DeChambeau after The Masters

There have been questions about whether DeChambeau is reverting to his old waysDeChambeau was criticised after seeming annoyed that Rory McIlroy did not speak to him during the final round at The Masters.

Some fans will, like Wagner, not particularly care. And when DeChambeau performs brilliant gestures, like making the day of young fans, it almost does not really matter if it is all an act.

What simply cannot be denied is that DeChambeau is one of the most entertaining names in the current game. Whether he is liked or not, you cannot help but be interested in what he is up to.
