Bryson DeChambeau’s brutal assessment of ‘diabolical’ LIV Golf course

Bryson DeChambeau was in the thick of the action going into the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City, but the Crushers captain again fell short, with Joaquin Niemann taking victory

Bryson DeChambeau slammed Club de Golf Chapultepec as “diabolical” after enduring another bout of final-round woes, this time unfolding at LIV Golf Mexico City.

The American powerhouse entered the third round atop the leaderboard, following an encouraging start which was helped by some huge drives. Nevertheless, as the round progressed, the Crushers’ leader was overtaken by Joaquin Niemann, who clinched his third LIV season trophy and a prized berth in the U.S. Open.

For DeChambeau, it marked yet another difficult Sunday — his second in just a fortnight. Earlier in the month, DeChambeau watched the Masters’ victory and his chance at a first green jacket slip through his fingers as Rory McIlroy triumphed, securing the career Grand Slam and snapping an 11-year major drought.

Despite being only two shots back from McIlroy at Augusta National going into the final day, he briefly took the lead with just two holes played on Sunday before stumbling due to costly mistakes. He must have longed for redemption in Mexico, but once more faltered when it mattered most.

Many had predicted DeChambeau would prosper in Mexico City’s high altitude, where the thin air would further amplify his formidable driving distance. His tee-off prowess was evident all week, yet it did not translate into bagging his inaugural LIV crown since the preceding year.

After blazing through the course with an impressive eight-under-par 63 on day one, DeChambeau shared his thoughts with the press: “The golf course is gettable, but it’s diabolical, as well. There were a lot of moments where I felt like I was going to get it to nine, ten-under, and there were moments where I’m like, man, ‘I could be three-under or two-under easily if I don’t get my act in shape.”

He continued to describe the whimsical nature of the course, saying: “It’s a teeter-totter golf course. You can hit a drive down by the green, but it depends on the lie, depends on the flag, depends on if you can make some six, seven-footers out here.” Questions followed on the subsequent day seeking further insights into the conditions that presented the main challenges, particularly regarding the taxing pin positions.

Elaborating on the difficulties posed, he explained, “So there’s some areas where the grass is really thick. And you barely get in the rough, and you can have a super thick li,e and it comes out dead and you have no control of the ball, and there are areas where in the rough it’s super firm and dry and fast and you can get fliers out of there..”

Ending with a reflection on the greens, he emphasized the stark contrast of playing conditions. “On the greens, if you’re above the hole on certain pin locations, considering where they placed them this week, it’s nearly impossible. So really, placing yourself in good positions and giving yourself a chance to make birdie every single hole is key, but it’s diabolical because of that dry factor and then wet factor that we have out here.”

Although DeChambeau didn’t emerge victorious, he seemed to have won over the Mexican crowd, who showed him a lot of love. He praised their support, saying: “They’re amazing people, encouraging, loving, just want to support you and cheer you on and shout your name really, really loud.”
