Rory McIlroy won the Masters on Sunday and finally completed the career Grand Slam – and his friend Tiger Woods was quick to congratulate him.

McIlroy endured a nervy 18 holes on Sunday, which ended up with him missing a putt for the championship on the last hole – forcing him into a playoff against Justin Rose. The northern Irishman held his nerve on the playoff, sending his approach shot to within just feet of the cup.

While Rose missed his birdie putt, McIlroy stood over a short tap-in for immortality – which he stroked home before bursting into tears on the green. McIlroy now becomes the sixth player in golf history to complete the Grand Slam – winning his fifth major 11 years after his

While Rose missed his birdie putt, McIlroy stood over a short tap-in for immortality – which he stroked home before bursting into tears on the green. McIlroy now becomes the sixth player in golf history to complete the Grand Slam – winning his fifth major 11 years after his previous one.

After McIlroy was presented with his Green Jacket, Woods tweeted: “Welcome to the club [McIlroy]. Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you’re a part of history. Proud of you!”

Woods missed this year’s tournament entirely due to a ruptured Achilles, which he suffered while training at home in an attempt to get ready to compete. The iconic golfer has remained away from the public eye ever since, and sparked concern by missing the Champions Dinner.

The meal is a tradition for former champions, who all come together in an ultra-exclusive ceremony to honour the previous year’s champion. While the likes of Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson and Jack Nicklaus were all in attendance – Woods was not.
