Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth, two prominent figures in professional golf, were notably absent from the 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational (API) at Bay Hill. This absence was due to the tournament’s decision not to extend sponsor exemptions to either player. Sam Saunders, Arnold Palmer’s grandson and a member of the API’s sponsor exemption committee, provided insights into this decision.

Saunders emphasized the committee’s commitment to maintaining a balanced and fair selection process. He highlighted the importance of rewarding players based on current performance, stating, “At the end of the day, it’s who’s getting the ball in the hole the fastest that are the ones who get the opportunities.”

The four sponsor exemptions for the 2025 API were granted to Justin Rose, Min Woo Lee, Mackenzie Hughes, and Rafael Campos. Campos’s selection was particularly notable, as Saunders praised him for embodying the spirit of Arnold Palmer and contributing positively to the game of golf.

Despite their past achievements and popularity, both Fowler and Spieth acknowledged the decision. Fowler, who had received sponsor exemptions into other signature events earlier in the season, accepted the outcome, remarking, “At the end of the day, play better.”

Spieth, who has had strong performances at Bay Hill in previous years, expressed his disappointment but recognized the need to improve his game to secure future invitations.
