Jon Rahm tells PGA Tour what they need from LIV Golf after honest admission on $600M move

Jon Rahm became one of the biggest names to make the move to LIV Golf from the PGA Tour and December 2023, and the Spaniard has spoken on what the future holds for the sport

Jon Rahm has pledged his support behind a global world tour in men’s professional golf, having had his say on the future of the sport.

Rahm was involved in the biggest move in LIV Golf history at the end of 2023, after signing a deal worth a reported $600 million to leave the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed circuit. His switch came just six months after the PGA Tour announced a shock framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF).

It was expected that as part of the negotiations, the PGA Tour would end their dispute with the LIV setup, with men’s professional golf expected to come back together following the recent split.

Two-and-a-half years on from the initial announcement, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the sport. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said this month that some aspects of LIV could be adopted into the circuit, but did not specify what.

When it comes to Rahm, he would like to see more worldwide golf played, an aspect pioneered by the breakaway league. “I am a realist, if it isn’t a thing yet, then I don’t let myself think about it too much,” he told The Joe Pomp Show of a potential deal.

“I love what we have been doing. I love we are going to South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia. I don’t mind traveling at all, but there are some that might. I don’t know how they can make that happen, but the idea of having a world tour-type thing is very enticing to me.

“I would love to. Seeing new cultures, visiting new cultures, especially when you put it in front of a crowd that hasn’t seen a high-level golf tournament before, it is incredible.” It was thought that Rahm’s move a little over a year ago would help bring the two rivals together.

Rahm admitted he did not believe his transfer would have such an impact, but did reveal the initial framework agreement announcement in June 2023 played a part in his decision to join LIV. “Truth be told I was looking out for myself and that’s it,” the former world No. 1 claimed.

“When the agreement happened it made me reevaluate things in my mind and open up a possibility of me joining and decided to do it after all. I never thought for one second that I could be the change for the two worlds, not coming together, but for the waters to calm down a little bit. I don’t think I ever said that, but if I were to be me, great, I gladly take that compliment. It is much more than just one player.”
