‘Tough week on the wrist’: Jordan Spieth ready for some rest after Genesis missed cut

Jordan Spieth’s return to the PGA Tour over the past three weeks has been a mix of highs and lows as he continues to recover from wrist surgery last August.
In his first start back at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he finished tied for 69th in the 80-player, no-cut event. However, he followed that with a strong performance at last week’s WM Phoenix Open, finishing tied for fourth—his best result on Tour in over a year.
That momentum was quickly halted by brutal conditions at Torrey Pines, where cold, wet weather and thick rough proved too much for his recovering wrist. A short week at the Genesis Invitational served as a reminder of the patience required to return to full strength.
Battling Pain at Torrey Pines
“It’s been a tough week on the wrist,” Spieth admitted after missing the cut at Torrey Pines with a second-round 74. “I wasn’t sure if I’d hit one more shot like my shot on 16 yesterday, I wasn’t going to finish the first round. I was OK to go today, but this cold, wet weather and the third week in a row—it was not good for it.”
Spieth had tried to manage his workload by limiting practice, but the conditions took a toll. Now, he’s looking forward to a week of rest and rehabilitation.
“It beat it up pretty good, but I’m hoping this next week—laying off of it for five or six days and working on it with therapy—will help. It’s just inflammation, so hopefully, it will go away. In a way, maybe pushing it was a good thing,” he said.
Managing Wrist Pain and Looking Ahead
Since undergoing surgery to repair a tendon that had popped out of its sheath, Spieth has felt occasional pain during flop shots and bunker shots. At Torrey Pines, the discomfort flared up again after he “saved a 4-iron” on the par-3 16th in Round 1.
“It’s always an iron or a wedge, never really a wood,” he noted.
Despite the setback, Spieth remains focused on patience and long-term improvement.
“Right this second, it’s hard [to stay patient], but once I get back home and have a week off, I’ll see the progress,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of improvement from when I left for Pebble Beach to now, and if I just keep improving, long term, it’ll be good.”
