A Look Back at the 2024 Genesis Invitational: Drama, Disqualifications, and Frustrations
The Genesis Invitational is one of the most anticipated tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar. While the 2025 edition has been relatively drama-free, last year’s tournament was anything but quiet.

As the 2025 Genesis Invitational wraps up at Torrey Pines South on Sunday, Mirror US Sport takes a look back at some of the most unforgettable moments from the 2024 event, where Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, and Scottie Scheffler all made headlines for different reasons.

This year, Patrick Rodgers has positioned himself atop the leaderboard with an impressive performance, holding a one-stroke lead at -8 heading into the final round. However, Denny McCarthy is just behind him, while Ludvig Åberg sits two shots back in third place. Davis Thompson, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, and Patrick Cantlay remain in contention, but they’ll need to overcome a four-stroke deficit and hope for a slip-up from Rodgers to claim victory.

While the 2025 tournament has delivered stellar performances, it has lacked the drama that unfolded at Riviera Golf Club last year. But what exactly happened with Spieth, Woods, and Scheffler in February 2024 that captured the golfing world’s attention?

Jordan Spieth Disqualified
For the first time in his career, Jordan Spieth was disqualified from a PGA Tour event—an unprecedented moment after 263 professional starts. His exit from the 2024 Genesis Invitational stemmed from an incorrect scorecard recorded during Friday’s round. According to The Express, Spieth mistakenly wrote a three on the par-three fourth hole instead of a four, leading to his disqualification.

The next day, he took full responsibility for the mistake, addressing his fans on social media:

“Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct.

Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on @PGATOUR, so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA.”

Scottie Scheffler’s Frustration Boils Over
Even the best in the game have their off moments, and Scottie Scheffler let his frustration show during his round at Riviera Golf Club. After setting himself up perfectly for a five-foot birdie putt on the par-five 11th hole, he shockingly missed the opportunity.
