Lauren Coughlin has been making waves on the LPGA Tour, proving that determination and hard work can turn dreams into reality. Since turning pro in 2017, she has experienced her fair share of ups and downs, but nothing has shaken her resolve. Her breakthrough victory at the 2024 CPKC Women’s Open was more than just a trophy—it was proof that she belongs among the game’s elite. Over the years, she has competed alongside some of the biggest names in golf, including Lydia Ko and Nelly Korda. But when it comes to pure admiration, there’s no contest—Ko is in a league of her own.

In an exclusive interview with Andrew Whitelaw on EssentiallySports’ YouTube channel, Coughlin shared her thoughts on the game and revealed her favorite player to watch. When asked which female golfer she enjoys following the most, she didn’t hesitate: “I love watching Lydia Ko! Lydia is probably one of my favorites to watch! She’s a magician with a wedge in her hand,” Coughlin said.

She went on to highlight Ko’s unique playing style, pointing out that rather than opting for a three-wood off the tee, Ko prefers to hit a controlled “squeeze cut” with her driver—a testament to her precision and deep understanding of her equipment. “She tees down the driver and hits just like a little squeeze cut. It’s so cool to watch,” Coughlin added.

But Ko’s talent extends beyond her driving technique. Coughlin was particularly in awe of her short game, saying, “She can do anything she wants with a wedge in her hand; she gets them up and down from everywhere.” This kind of praise underscores the widespread respect Ko commands among her peers, including Coughlin’s close friend and competitor, Nelly Korda.

Coughlin’s admiration for Ko offers a fascinating perspective, especially given her friendship with Korda and their shared experiences at events like the Solheim Cup. While both Ko and Korda are world-class players, Coughlin’s preference highlights the different strengths that set them apart. Ko’s creativity and adaptability seem to resonate deeply with Coughlin, shaping her appreciation for the finer details of the game.
