Jordan Spieth, Max Homa fail to make Genesis Invitational cut at Torrey Pines

Jordan Spieth and Max Homa struggled to find their form in Southern California this week, resulting in early exits from the Genesis Invitational.

Two of the PGA Tour’s most popular American players missed the cut at the third Signature Event of the season, which was relocated from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

For Spieth, this marks his first missed cut of the season in just his third start. After making his season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am—his first tournament since undergoing wrist surgery in August—he tied for 69th. However, he showed promising signs at last week’s WM Phoenix Open, finishing tied for fourth with four rounds of 68 or lower.

“I didn’t feel like this was a one-off,” Spieth said after his Phoenix performance. “It felt like I am trending in the right direction. My expectations have been low, just trying to get a little bit better each time.”

But Torrey Pines proved unforgiving. Spieth opened with a 4-over 76 on Thursday, recording six bogeys and only two birdies—an uncharacteristic contrast from his steady play in Arizona, where he made just two bogeys across 72 holes. A second-round 2-over 74 left him at 6-over, sealing his fate.

Homa, meanwhile, has struggled to recapture the form that saw him finish tied for third at the 2024 Masters. Since then, he has managed just one top-10 finish, coming at the Wells Fargo Championship in May. His best result this season was a T26 at The Sentry, followed by a withdrawal at the Farmers Insurance Open, a T53 at Pebble Beach, and a missed cut at the WM Phoenix Open.

“I’m pretty into the ‘trusting the process’ type mindset,” Homa said earlier this week. “I know I’m getting better even if it looks like I’m getting worse. I think what I’m doing is right. It’s very difficult to continue to see bad, but last week I actually hit the ball incredible and still missed the cut by five.”

That frustration continued at Torrey Pines, where Homa posted rounds of 76 and 75, finishing three shots outside the cut line. Though his performance was an improvement from Phoenix, he will need to rediscover his game soon to maintain his standing in major tournaments.
