Iconic 18th hole location from Tiger Woods’ 2008 U.S. Open victory expected to be used for final round of The Genesis Invitational

The pin location for the 18th hole in the final round of The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines’ South Course will be a familiar sight.

PGA TOUR VP of Rules and Officiating, Steve Rintoul, revealed that the tournament will “more than likely” use the front-right hole position—made famous by Tiger Woods’ legendary putt during the final round of the 2008 U.S. Open.

This particular pin placement is rarely seen during the TOUR’s annual stop at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open, where the final-round pin is typically positioned front-left. That setup allows players to take advantage of a backstop behind the hole. However, with The Genesis Invitational being temporarily relocated from Riviera Country Club due to the Los Angeles wildfires, tournament organizers sought a way to make this edition stand out from what players experienced just three weeks ago.

What better way to differentiate the Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational than by recreating one of his most unforgettable moments?

“Most fans recognize the traditional front-left pin on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open, but how do we make the course look different on TV so soon after?” Rintoul told PGATOUR.COM earlier this week. “That’s the challenge we face, and I think we have a great plan. You’ll likely see a front-right hole location—the very spot where Tiger sank his dramatic putt to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate.”

Although Woods withdrew from the tournament on Monday following the passing of his mother, Kultida, he is expected to be on-site over the weekend as the rest of the PGA TOUR aims to create their own magic on Torrey Pines’ iconic 18th.

“Both pin locations are near the water and offer plenty of excitement,” Rintoul added. “Our goal is to make this event feel distinct from the Farmers.”
