Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka given Rory McIlroy reality check by golf legend

Rory McIlroy has been in imperious form this year, but has remarkably been unable to add to his major haul since winning the PGA Championship way back in 2014

Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka have been told they should be envious of Rory McIlroy’s form in 2024, despite the Northern Irishman narrowly missing out on this year’s US Open crown.

Despite a whopping 21 top-10 finishes in the past decade, McIlroy hasn’t clinched a major since his PGA Championship triumph back in 2014. Golf legend Padraig Harrington has been singing McIlroy’s praises, telling the Irish Independent: “Wouldn’t you love to be in his position? Who wouldn’t swap with him?

Well, maybe Scottie [Scheffler] wouldn’t. Xander [Schauffele] looks like he’ll be a force going forward. But outside of that, you know, you might say Bryson [DeChambeau] or Brooks Koepka mightn’t swap with him, but they should!”

DeChambeau ultimately bagged the US Open title this year and was a whisker away from winning the PGA Championship, while Koepka last hoisted the US Open trophy in 2018 and the PGA Championship the following year.

But Harrington is convinced that McIlroy, at 35, is outperforming them both currently. He also highlighted McIlroy’s putting game as the best it’s been for ages, suggesting that the major title drought could be getting under his skin.

Harrington added: “[McIlroy is] unbelievable. He’s driving it great. He seems very comfortable with that. He chips it unbelievable. His putting is the best it’s been. He’s putted great the last three, four years.

I’d say it will be frustrating for him. The last while, Rory keeps coming up against guys at their peak. Whether it’s a Brooks, or a Bryson, a Xander, or a Scottie. He’s always there, but there’s always somebody else at the door.”
