Scottie Scheffler has had a remarkable year

No. 1 ranked pro golfer in the world is a 2024 Texan of the Year finalist.

Dallas’ Scottie Scheffler isn’t just the No. 1 golfer in the world, he’s been the No. 1 golfer for all of 2024. That’s a remarkable feat in a sport in which even the best can tumble on any given week.

Just how good is Scheffler? Consider this simple assessment of him from the great Tiger Woods: “He really doesn’t do anything wrong.”

Woods, who in 2009 was the last player to claim golf’s top spot for an entire calendar year, made the comment in early December as Scheffler was about to win his ninth title in 2024, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

It was the icing on the cake for the 28-year-old. This year he won his second title at the prestigious Masters Tournament, an Olympic gold medal, the Players Championship and the FedEx Cup. He has earned more than $60 million this year in prize and bonus money.

Scheffler is known for his mental toughness, consistent play and lack of, well, mistakes. He also has been credited by his peers for his sportsmanship and determination to always improve.

“I think the biggest thing I see is that he’s always trying to get better,” professional golfer and fellow Dallasite Tom Kim told The Associated Press recently.

Of course, like many professional athletes, Scheffler’s actions off the course have caught some attention this year, too. On the early morning of May 17, he was arrested by police in Louisville, Ky., outside the gate of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this year’s PGA Championship.

Officers working a fatal accident site said at the time Scheffler ignored their directions and injured an officer with his car. He was arrested, handcuffed and put in the back seat of a police car, images of which along with his mugshot went viral.
