Is CME Group Tour Championship 2024 Lexi Thompson’s Final Event Before Retirement? LPGA Star’s Future Explored

Is it ever easy to walk away from something you’ve poured your heart and soul into? For Lexi Thompson, the answer might not come lightly. Back in May, the LPGA star made the bold decision to step away from the golfing world. But why? Well, there’s more than one reason. First and foremost, her mental health took center stage. “I think we all have our own [mental health] struggles, especially out here. Unfortunately in golf, you lose more than you win,” she shared in an open letter on Instagram.

Then there’s the unrelenting pressure, both on her game and from the ever-watchful eyes of the media. As she put it, “Social media never sleeps, with comments and criticisms flooding in from around the world. It can be exhausting to maintain a smile on the outside while grappling with struggles on the inside.” But it’s not all about leaving something behind. Thompson’s also looking ahead. She’s excited to explore life beyond the greens, like traveling, pursuing interests she couldn’t while on tour, and maybe even starting a family.

Thompson has always been one of those names you’d hear on fans’ lists when they’re asked about their favorite golfers. So, when the news of her retirement broke, it hit fans hard. After all, this season is supposed to be her last as a full-time competitor. The idea that the CME Group Tour Championship might be the final time we see her iconic swing professionally adds an extra sting to the announcement.

But…yes, there is always a “but,” right? So is this really the end? Not exactly. Thompson has clarified that she’s stepping back, not stepping away completely. As she put it, “I may tee it up a few times next year.” During a press conference, she confirmed her partial retirement, explaining, “A matter of when and what tournaments, I don’t know. I am just going to take time for myself and take it day by day.”

It’s a well-known fact that Thompson has a soft spot for the Solheim Cup. “Coming into the year, even though I had my announcement on my mind, I wanted to be here on U.S. soil being able to represent my country. That was my number one goal,” she shared during the 2024 Solheim Cup. Her love for the team dynamic and camaraderie with her fellow pros makes it hard to imagine her missing out entirely. So don’t be surprised if we see her representing Team USA again in 2026.

While Thompson has yet to make any official announcement for her 2025 Tour plans, her impressive resume keeps the door wide open. Her top-10 finish at this year’s Women’s PGA Championship ensures a spot in next year’s field. Plus, thanks to her 2017 victory at the then-ANA Inspiration (now Chevron Championship), she has a lifetime invitation to that major. “It’s still a memory that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life,” she said. “Getting my first major win at that event. It’s very special to me.” It’s no wonder she’s already “circled it on her calendar” as a potential start.

And let’s not forget, there’s still more to this season. Before the year wraps up, Thompson will team up with Rickie Fowlerat the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational, running from December 9–15. Also, by ending up in the CME field and being among the top 60 in CME points, Thompson will be near the top of the LPGA Tour’s priority list for the entire season. So, while she’s taking a step back, it’s far from goodbye. There’s still plenty of room for Thompson to make her mark, even on her terms.
