Top 5 Solheim Cup Records That Seem Too Good to Be True

Published

on

The most prestigious event on the women’s golf circuit has finally arrived. The 19th edition of the Solheim Cup will be hosted at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia from September 13 to September 15. Once again, there will be a fierce fight between Team USA led by Stacy Lewis, and Team Europe led by Morgan Pressel with the 12 best players from the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour.

The teams will be playing fourball and foursomes on both Friday and Saturday with 12 singles matches on Sunday, which will mark the conclusion of the match. With just a few days left for the event to kickstart, let us walk down the memory lane of the last 18 editions.

5. Charley Hull bags the youngest player record in 2013

Charley Hull has been playing on the Ladies European Tour for almost two decades now, and it is pretty much the same with her Solheim Cup appearances. The 28-year-old golfing pro made her debut at the event when she was just 17 years old back in August 2013. Her first opening started at the Colorado GC in Denver. Despite having played for so long on the team, there is one wish that Hull still dreams of fulfilling- being on the winning team.

4. The only two Aces at the Solheim Cup

The first edition of the Solheim Cup was contested at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla., in 1990. It has been almost 34 years since the inception of the event, but can you imagine how many aces have been carded during the event? Well, it’s a shocker that there have been only two so far! The first ace was bagged by Anna Nordqvist back in the 2013 edition. It was the Ace that made Team Europe win the match that year precisely.

She entered the day 2 foursomes along with partner Caroline Hedwall to play with Morgan Pressel and Jessica Korda of Team USA. The former made a birdie on the 16th hole and had a 1-stroke lead in the match. The second ace was carded at the last year’s edition by Emily Kristine Pederson. She too was a member of Team Europe. It occurred during the opening round football match when she was partnered with Maja Stark, teeing up with Jennifer Kupcho and Allisen Corpuz.

3. Laura Davies bags the highest no. of points

The UK golf professional Laura Davies is recorded to be the golfer who has scored the highest points (25) at the Solheim Cup so far. She had been playing for the European team for a long stretch of 21 years (1990 to 2011). Davies made her appearance in a total of 46 matches in the field, where she was part of the winning team 22 times, and lost 18 matches. She also made halves in the remaining six of her matches.

In her ninth appearance at the Solheim Cup, she broke Annika Sorenstam’s record after winning the Saturday four-ball match on September 24, 2011. She was partnered with Melissa Reid, teeing it up with USA team members Michelle Wie West and Brittany Lang. That year, Davies was also the oldest player to tee up for Europe at Killeen Castle, the of record of which was later on broker by Catriona Matthew.

2. Laura Davies appeared in the Solheim Cup the highest number of times

Nobody has quite an experience like Laura Davies at the Solheim Cup series. Apart from boasting the record of having the highest points, the European team member has also made the highest number of appearances at the game – a whopping 12 times. She began with the inaugural edition at Lake Nona, 14 years from now.

She has also played the role of the Vice Captain thrice. However, despite her record-breaking presence, Davies has never acted as the Captain of Team Europe. When asked what truly was the reason behind it, she stated that she was still trying to play her way in. “Now I do commentary so I can’t give it a hundred percent. I haven’t got the time and it’s not something I want to do,” said the golfing pro in an interview with Bunkered.
