PGA Tour fans appear split as to whether Rory McIlroy intended to snap his driver in half in the final round of the BMW Championship.

PGA Tour fans are divided as to whether or not Rory McIlroy snapped his driver in half on purpose during the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy, 35, appeared to apply force over his driver shaft as he bent down to pick up his tee peg while his ball sailed towards the water.

His TaylorMade Qi10 Driver then snapped in half to the shock of those watching on.

Thankfully for McIlroy his golf ball stayed dry as it rested on the grass bank.

McIlroy’s driver snap led to instant debate in the Sky Sports Golf commentary box during the live broadcast.

One member of the studio considered a frustrated McIlroy did it on purpose, while another member thought it was just a freak accident.

Lead commentator Ewen Murray sat on the fence throughout the debate.

There was something of a 50/50 split among PGA Tour fans on X / Twitter, too.

‘Of course it was an accident,’ said one fan.

‘Yes definitely not intentional,’ commented another.

Tiger Woods‘ former long-time golf coach Hank Haney also considered it was an accident.

But others were not so sure.
