Jordan Spieth was left red-faced at the 2019 Scottish Open after he ignored the advice of his caddie Michael Greller – but was then made to eat humble pie on the sixth hole

At the Scottish Open two years ago, Jordan Spieth learned the hard way that his caddie Michael Greller’s advice is not to be ignored.

The American, who had a tough opening two rounds at The Renassaince Club this week and missed the cut, experienced a cringeworthy moment on the par-three sixth hole in 2022 that left him eating humble pie. Caught on camera in a dilemma over club choice at the short par three, Spieth was battling a fierce wind on a mere 111-yard hole and was baffled by the prospect of executing a lofty wedge shot to the green.

Xander Schauffele had earlier commented on the challenging shot, saying: “A hundred ten yards and you’re trying to figure out how to hit a 140-yard shot but not too low or too high because then it will end up in the wrong place.”

However, Greller, unfazed, assured Spieth there was nothing to fret about. “Is this even getting within 10 yards of the green?” Spieth questioned his caddie, hesitating over the shot. “You think it does?”

“Yeah, I still like that,” Greller responded coolly as Spieth mulled over the decision. “I mean, if it ends up, you know, 100, that’s good.”

Despite his doubts, Spieth went ahead with the shot under Greller’s counsel, only to watch the ball’s flight with dismay and turn to Greller, regretting not having challenged the club selection more firmly.
