Scottie Scheffler has announced himself as the best player on the planet on 2024, but Bryson DeChambeau’s coach Dana Dahlquist believes players should be aiming to knock him off his throne

Bryson DeChambeau’s swing coach Dana Dahlquist has admitted he would not want any of his players to accept Scottie Scheffler as golf’s No. 1 player, amid thePGA Tour star’s dominance in 2024.

Scheffler has announced himself as a modern-day great this campaign, dominating the PGA Tour with a whopping six victories in the space of three months – one of those being the Masters at Augusta National in April. This has seen the American move head and shoulders above his rivals in the world rankings, even earning him comparisons to the great Tiger Woods.

One man who knows exactly what it takes to succeed at the top of the game is Dahlquist, and whilst he recognises Scheffler’s talents, he would not want any of his students to be comfortable with the Masters champion being the best in the game.

Right now, everyone’s elected Scottie Scheffler [to the throne].” DeChambeau’s coach told the Fore Play Podcast. Having described Scheffler as a ‘great human being’, Dahlquist went on: “I wouldn’t allow any of my students to like Scottie, to be like, ‘He’s the guy.’”

Away from Scheffler, Dahlquist is working alongside one of professional golf ‘s most in-form stars in DeChambeau. Whilst he is yet to win on the LIV Golf circuit in 2024, DeChambeau has been at his best on the major stage, finishing tied-sixth at the Masters and runner-up at the PGA Championship, before winning last month’s U.S. Open.

The Crushers captain put in a major performance for the ages around Pinehurst No. 2, fending off PGA Tour rival Rory McIlroy to get his hands on the title. Despite often being a divisive figure during his career, DeChambeau proved to be a popular champion among fans watching on at North Carolina.

In response to his warm reception, the LIV star was seen celebrating with those who watched on, parading his trophy through the crowd, allowing them to get a touch of the iconic piece of silverware. Amid his own impressive run of form though, DeChambeau did have time for Scheffler.

Speaking in his pre-U.S. Open press conference in June, DeChambeau admitted he stopped Scheffler in his tracks to find out how he has been playing so well. “I saw him, and I was like, ‘Dude, you’re playing unbelievable, what are you doing, man?'” he commented. “”He’s like, ‘I’m just playing good golf, I don’t know. It’s one of those things.'”

DeChambeuau went on: “He doesn’t go too crazy. He just hits the right shots at the right time. He’s really in control of the environment, not only his environment but the conditions on the golf course. He knows what the golf ball is going to do.

“He knows how to react accordingly. When things don’t go right, he’s able to right the ship pretty quickly. That’s just a recipe for success, and he’s been able to do it longer than anyone has for a long time. Again, he is the gold standard right now, and we’re all looking up to him going, all right, how do we get to that level?”
