Scottie Scheffler is attempting to add to his 2024 major tally by winning the U.S. Open this week in Pinehurst, North Carolina, but he’ll face competition from the best golfers in the world

The biggest names in the golfing world descend on Pinehurst, North Carolina this week for the second major of the season; the U.S. Open.

Aside from Jon Rahm, who had to withdraw from the tournament due to a foot injury, the field is jam-packed with the best players in the world playing on one of the toughest courses possible. The greens at Pinehurst No.2 have already been described as “borderline”, suggesting even the top players are going to struggle.

The tournament represents a great chance for Rory McIlroy to get himself back in the winner’s circle, while Scottie Scheffler is looking to add to his Masters win from April. The likes of Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland will be in the mix for their first-ever major championship, and Phil Mickelson is still hunting the elusive career grand slam.

Ahead of the tournament getting going, we asked the team at Mirror Sport to predict the winner ahead of a thrilling tournament.

Andrew Gamble – Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is in the form of his life and represents the safest major pick since… Scheffler before he got arrested at the PGA Championship.

Pinehurst No. 2 has been modified since 2014 with longer greens added to avoid a repeat of Martin Kaymer’s putting excellence.

LIV Golf ’s Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith are in form with styles suited to Pinehurst, while Xander Schauffele will be the biggest threat from the PGA Tour, but it’s a matter of time before Scheffler adds another major to his Masters titles.
