Is Scottie Scheffler records going down easily? as his record was broken by little-known tour pro
World rankings and career prize money meant nothing to Frankie Capan III, yesterday.
The American has only played three times on the PGA Tour, amassing just north of $17,000 in prize money and sits 30th in the Korn Ferry Tour points list.
Currently the world number 298, Capan III is yet to win on the feeder circuit and has missed the cut in over 30% of his starts.
But after an electric opening round at the Texas Rangers Golf Club, Capan III now has some bragging rights over the world No. 1.
Despite chasing the lowest professional golf round in history, he managed to snatch a record from Scottie Scheffler all whilst dealing with blurred vision.
“It was a really weird sensation, one that I’ve only felt two or three times before,” the 24-year-old said. “It’s like everything outside of exactly what I was looking at was blurry.”

Fortunately, his targets were crystal clear, resulting in a 13-under-par round of 58 at the Veritex Bank Championship.
The Minnesota native made par at the first but followed it with four consecutive birdies in impressive fashion, but what came next was hard to believe.
After three consecutive pars, Capan III eagled the ninth hole and made birdie on the following seven holes to reach his final total for the day.
So dialled in, he wasn’t even aware of the course being a par 71. Capan III assumed it was a par 72 and chased one more birdie to break the course record and that’s where Scheffler comes in.
The two-time Masters champ set the course record in Arlington four years ago, a round of 59 that looked safe.
With back-to-back pars on the final two holes, Capan III claimed the record, despite only learning so on his way into scoring.
“What was it?” he asked. “That was 58?”

It left him three shots clear of Trent Phillips in second and a further shot ahead of third-placed Tim Wilding.
Speaking of Scheffler, he said: “Whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage.
“I was thinking, I didn’t want to come all that way and end up shooting 60. It’s funny because it didn’t feel all that special.
“The number itself, yeah, it’s special, but I feel like I was just kind of hitting the ball where I was looking, hit a few nice shots and was able to capitalize on them and add them up at the end of the day.
“I thought the pins were fairly simple today, the wind was fairly simple, and most of the tougher holes played downwind. It’s no surprise that I finished and saw I was only leading by three.”
Capan’s sub-60 round was just the seventh in Korn Ferry Tour history, sixth in the last 372 days and third this season.
Stephan Jaeger held the previous KFT record of 12-under 58, whilst the outright record sits with Cristobal del Solar and David Carey, who remain the only pro golfers to shoot 57 in competition.
