Masters live updates: Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler atop the leaderboard
The start of the 88th Masters was pushed back Thursday because of weather that threatened the pristine grounds of Augusta National, though the majority of the heavy rain and winds tracked south of the course.
The delay meant those players starting late were unlikely to finish their opening rounds before sundown. Those who didn’t finish will have to complete their opening rounds Friday morning.
Below, we will be keeping track of Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris and other North Texas golfers on the course as they chase the green jacket. For the full leaderboard from Augusta National, click here:
2024 Masters live updates
1. Bryson Dechambeau (-7, finished): An SMU product playing on the LIV tour, Dechambeau is making his eighth Masters appearance. He got off to a quick start Thursday, recording birdies on the first three holes for the early tournament lead. He ended his round with a run of five birdies in the last seven holes to head to the clubhouse as the solo leader after shooting a first-round 65.
T-2. Scottie Scheffler (-6, finished): Dallas’ Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, is the most overwhelming Masters favourite since Tiger Woods in 2013. He already has two wins this year and nearly had a third in a row at the Houston Open. Scheffler vaulted within one shot of the lead with a birdie on No. 16. His first-round 66 is Scheffler’s lowest score in 17 career rounds at the Masters Tournament.
T-7. Will Zalatoris (-2, finished): Plano’s Zalatoris is making his third Masters appearance. In his first two starts at Augusta National, he finished runner-up and one stroke behind Hideki Matsuyama in 2021 and T-6 in 2022. After withdrawing before starting last year’s Masters, he underwent back surgery and missed the rest of the PGA Tour season. He carded three birdies and one bogey, but his most impressive hole came on No. 13 where he recorded one of the day’s rare eagles.
T-9. Ludvig Aberg (-2, thru 11): Two players in the top 10 in the world, U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark (4) and Aberg (9), are making their Masters debuts. Last June, he concluded his collegiate career at Texas Tech as the top-ranked amateur in the world and has continued his success into his pro career. He birdied No. 2 to get under par.
T-17. Tom Kim (E, thru 11): Kim, a Dallas resident, is making his second Masters appearance. He was T-16 in 2023 in his debut at Augusta National. He birdied No. 4 to get off to a good start Thursday.
T-69. Jordan Spieth (+2, thru 11): Dallas’ Spieth is coming up on two years since his last win and he missed two straight cuts at The Players Championship and Valspar Championship. But Augusta National suits him and his putting. He holds the record for leading after seven straight rounds and has played in the final group three times. However, he got off to a rough start Thursday with a double bogey on No. 1.
