She also won the Aldila Junior Classic to become the second-youngest winner in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). She emerged victorious at the 2008 U.S. Girls Junior and represented the USA in the 2010 Curtis Cup. In 2010, Thompson played as an amateur for the first half of the year and turned pro after remaining undefeated in the Curtis Cup.
Lexi Thompson’s Pro Career
Thompson kicked off her professional golf career on June 16, 2010. Initially, she had to rely on sponsor exemptions to compete in
tournaments as she hadn’t earned the status of an LPGA Tour member just yet. Her first sponsor’s exemption came at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, where she missed the cut by four strokes.
That year, she competed in the qualifiers for the US Women’s Open and made her place in the field for the major. She eventually finished T10 in the competition and collected her first-ever professional check. Just two weeks later, she finished T2 at the Evian Masters and surged to 75th place on the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Thompson also played on the Fuzian Tour as a pro. She won her first ever LPGA event, the Navistar LPGA Classic, in 2011, when she was just 16 years old. She then became the youngest female player to achieve this feat. Lydia Ko later broke this record. Later that year, she emerged as the winner at the Dubai Ladies Masters on the Ladies European Tour (LET). This victory made her the youngest professional winner on the LET circuit.
Thompson had petitioned the LPGA to waive the rule that LPGA members must be at least 18 years of age. She was successful and entered the 2011 LPGA Qualifying School for Tour membership in 2012. After her 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic win, she petitioned the Tour for membership based on her win. Her request was approved, and she became an LPGA Tour member in 2012.
Thomas has gone on to script eleven wins on the LPGA Tour. Her most recent triumph came at the ShopRite LPGA Classic on June 9, 2019. On the Ladies European Tour, she has won twice, and she has had two other victories, one of which came on the Japan Tour in 2016.
So far, Thompson has nabbed one major title. It came at the 2014 Chevron Championship (then Kraft Nabisco Championship) when she was just 19 years of age. She had beaten Michelle Wie West by three strokes to claim the prestigious title. The victory also helped her take home an incredible $300,000 in earnings!
