Lexi Thompson Becomes Youngest Ever to Win

At the age of 16, Lexi Thompson became the youngest player ever to win an LPGA tournament.

With a total score of 17-under 271 and five strokes ahead of second place at the Navistar LPGA Classic in Pratville, Alabama, Lexi Thompson became the youngest player ever to win an LPGA tournament. The 16-year-old golfing phenom shattered the previous record held by Paula Creamer, who won in 2005 at the age of 18.
“I knew I could take the record, but I focused on playing my game today,” Thompson said. “I was just focused on playing the golf course and doing my best.”
Thompson entered the final round leading by five strokes, which eventually increased to seven strokes after 10 holes. On the verge of an easy victory, Lexi’s only collapse was at Hole 11 and 12, where she bogeyed both holes. She later gained the strokes back by dropping birdies on both 16 and 17, which more or less sealed the deal for the teenager.
The victory also gave Thompson an automatic entrance to the CME Group Titleholders this November.

While Thompson was making the shots, her father Scott Thompson was helping her call them. Scott has been on her bag as caddy since day one. “I couldn’t be more proud,” said Scott Thompson. “We’ve been working really hard and it all came together this week.”
Fountain of youth
From being the youngest female to ever qualify to play in the U.S. Women’s Open as a 12-year-old to being the youngest LPGA Tour event winner ever, Thompson showed her focus and finesse on the golf course.
Thompson was named Golfweek’s 2009 Women’s Amateur Player of the Year and the 2009 Junior Girls Player of the year. Along with being the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open, she has represented her country in the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Solheim Cup, and was the youngest winner ever of the Junior PGA Championship in 2009 and made her pro debut at The ShopRite LPGA Classic in 2010.
