PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan believes Tiger Woods would require convincing before offering a Players Championship exemption to a former winner who is not otherwise eligible.

There is a threat that may soon apply to Woods. The two-time Players Champion is not in the lineup for this week’s event, despite having the chance to compete due to his 2019 Masters victory.

There is a threat that may soon apply to Woods. The two-time Players Champion is not in the lineup for this week’s event, despite having the chance to compete due to his 2019 Masters victory.

Despite the chance that the 48-year-old will gain from a new category, Monahan believes Woods, who serves as a Player Director on the PGA Tour’s Policy Board, will be hesitant to accept. He stated, “I believe you all know Tiger well enough to understand that he wants to earn his way into everything – into every tournament. “That is his makeup.”

Despite probable objections from the 15-time Major winner, Monahan did not fully dismiss the concept, but he underlined that Woods would be certainly be the biggest stumbling block.

He went on to say, “I believe that as you move forward and evolve as an organisation, and you consider how to serve and satisfy a furious fan base, those talks will most likely take place at the Policy Board meeting, and I am confident that we will have them. But he would be the toughest to persuade.”

Despite Woods’ most recent appearance at the TPC Sawgrass tournament in 2019, it was expected that he would play this year as he ramped up preparations for April’s Masters. However, those aspirations were dashed when he was not mentioned in the 144-player field, with no explanation provided for his choice to boycott the event.
